Gender Equality or Gender Justice? An Analytical Discussion on Ayatollah Khamenei’s Perspective

Abstract
According to Ayatollah Khamenei, gender equality is not valid, but gender justice is valid. Accordingly, the central issue of this article is to explore the reasons why gender equality is considered invalid and why gender justice is deemed valid. This paper, using a critical analytical method and referencing textual documents, examines gender equality and gender justice. The findings indicate that in international documents and English sources, the central theme in interpreting gender justice is "equality," around which various strategies are articulated. However, in Islamic thought, justice is not interpreted as absolute equality, and the aforementioned strategies result from a paradigmatic confrontation between Islamic and feminist beliefs, with only some of them being acceptable at a superficial level. In Islamic thought, the valid meaning of gender justice is defined as: "placing everything in its rightful place in the relationships between men and women, and the laws, processes, and structures governing them." In this definition, the subject of justice is men and women, not various genders, and the condition for justice is placing everything in its rightful place by considering the greatest possible benefits and harms, rather than adhering to absolute equality. In this context, the most important strategies for achieving gender justice include relying on contemporary jurisprudential ijtihad (interpretation), legal and structural reforms, cultural reforms, political and social meritocracy, family-centeredness, and attention to the perception of gender justice.
